ESPN Great Outdoor Games General Glossary

In case the lingo and terminology used in the upcoming ESPN Great Outdoor Games is unfamiliar to you, here is a glossary of some frequently used terms in the four sport categories — Fishing, Timber Events, Sporting Dogs and Target Sports.

Belly — The mid-section of a fly fishing line.

Bermuda Triangle — The name of one of the six archery targets, derived from its triangular shape. Others: Hole in the Wall, Obstruction, Straight Away, Thread the Needle, and William Tell.

Birling — Another term for log rolling.

Boom — A long string of logs connected end-to-end and used in the timber sport's Run, Roll and Drive competition.

Boxloader — In the Sporting Dog event of Flyball, the person who stands at the end of the Flyball lane and loads the balls into the spring-loaded box. This person also acts as a coach to the dogs as they come down the lane.

Brown Trout — The fish most likely to be caught in the fly fishing competition. A coldwater fish that averages 8 to 12 inches in length.

Caulked Shoes — Shoes with spikes on the bottom to help the competitor stay on the log during the Timber Sport's Log Rolling competition.

Dry Fly — A type of fly fishing lure that imitates insects that float on the water's surface.

East Coast Fakeout — A move in the Sporting Dog Agility competition in which the handler makes a quick turn into the dog to convice the dog to change direction Also known as a "reverse flow pivot."

Fletching — The guidance system on the rear end of an archery arrow, constructed of feather or plastic vanes.

Hot Saw — A modified, customized chain saw. Some use an engine taken from a power mower or snowmobile.

Lunkers — A colloquialism for "big fish."

Riffles — A characteristic of moving water that is comprised of fast, shallow water running over gravel or small rocks. Usually found where the water widens.

Withers — A dog's shoulder, the point at which the leg joint meets the top of the back.

X-Ring — An alternative name for the bullseye in all target sports.
