Folsom Lake selected for Bass Fishing event
ESPN Outdoors Communications — May 5, 2003

RENO, Nev. — Bass anglers at this summer's ESPN Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge will test their skills against California's Folsom Lake.

The 18,000-acre lake is home to both largemouth and smallmouth bass and has a reputation as a challenging, well-stocked fishery.

"We selected Folsom because it's a strong fishery with a great reputation," said sport organizer Randy McBride, a tournament manager with BASS.

"There's a lot of trophy bass waiting out there to make our tournament exciting."

For the first time, bass anglers will compete in two-man teams. Ten anglers will fish from five boats during each of the competition days.

The team with the heaviest two-day, cumulative weight will take home gold medals and the $10,000 top prize.

Anglers will launch from Granite Bay State Park at 6 a.m. on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12. The first round weigh-in will take place at the marina on Friday, while the second round weigh-in will be held at the timber stage in Reno's Rancho San Rafael Park at 4 p.m. Saturday.

"We anticipate good on-site crowds and we plan to put on a great show for Folsom," said Eric Matijevich, director of the Great Outdoor Games.

"We'll also have a jumbotron at Rancho San Rafael Park, so our on-site audience can enjoy some highlight clips from the day one action and weigh-in."

The ESPN Great Outdoor Games will be held July 10-13 at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno-Tahoe. The Games are the ultimate championships for outdoor sports and feature target sports, timber events, sporting dogs and fishing.

This year's competition will be televised on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 beginning July 19.

The Games are free to the public and feature four days of wide-ranging, fierce competition, a festive atmosphere, including an interactive sponsor village, and the opportunity to meet premier outdoor athletes from around the world.
