Lock-Eye Razzle drives to Disc
ESPN Outdoors Communications — July 10, 2004

MADISON, Wis. — Tim Geib of Atlanta had four of the seven longest throws in three rounds of competition and Lock-Eye Razzle caught every one of them Saturday evening to win the first Disc Drive gold medal at the ESPN Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge.

Tim Geib & Razzle
Lock-Eye Razzle was the first-place finisher with Tim Geib as the handler.
Geib and Lock-Eye Razzle, a border collie, scored a 195-foot catch in the championship round that held up against three other competitors. It was the first year of the event in the games, held at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center.

Twelve teams competed in the distance throw and catch. Dogs start at their handlers' sides or behind them and race to catch the Frisbee disc before it hits the ground or goes out of bounds. Teams got three throws in the first round, two in the second and two in the medal round, all against a time limit. The best throw and catch in each round counts.

A slight headwind at the beginning of the event changed midway through, dying and creating what Geib and silver medalist Darron Barrus of Pelham, Ala., called "stagnant air."

While the disc was not disturbed by air currents, eventually it would stall and begin its descent, creating challenges for the dog running full-speed and then having to slow down to gauge the disc's fall.

"We had that headwind early and I was looking at the right side of the field, trying to throw to it because it sloped down and was lower than the rest of the field," Geib said.

"But my best throw in the first round was a 202-footer that was right in the center of the field. By the time you get to the last round, though, you're simply going for distance. You're not trying to play to make the cut. You're looking for the long throws and catches."

Ciela, an Australian shepherd-border collie mix, handled by Greg Tresan of Ball Ground, Ga., claimed the bronze with a distance of 168.91. Barrus and Hurricane's silver-medal distance was 181.75, their best of the contest.

Geib had throws of 182-08, 187-06 and 202-01 in the first round, easily outdistancing the field as Lock-Eye Razzle moved on to the second round. A long toss of 178-02 put them in the finals. Lock-Eye is owned by Pam and John Crawford of Atlanta, who are in the Greater Atlanta Dog and Disc Club with Geib.

"Lock-Eye is an excellent dog to work with," said Geib, who traveled to Madison a week early to work with the dog.

"I've been with her for a week, fed her, played with her and spent time with her, so we got accustomed to each other."

Barrus had two misses in the first round, putting the pressure on him to score with his final throw. He nailed it, though, and played to the crowd that surrounded the field cheering on the acrobatic catches and long throws.

"I had the whole game riding on that third toss," Barrus said.

A downer to the event was the absence of Falco, handled by Mark Molnar and in Geib's words, "the favorite coming in today." Falco chased down a long first-round throw, then became disoriented looking for Molnar, weaved through the crowd and eventually was treated for heat stress with cool water and shade.

"That really was a shame," Geib said. "Mark and Falco hold the world (distance) record and it's tough to lose a top team you really respect and want to compete against. But like Mark says, they don't give out the Super Bowl trophy before the game is played."
