Perry be good
By Dave Landahl

The days of walleye pros simply dragging night crawlers in deep water is long gone and so is the myth that walleye anglers don't make good bass busters.

Perry Good of Brainerd, Minn., knows a thing or two about bass fishing. Good has a history of fishing the old Red Man circuit back in the 1980s and cashing checks in just about every bass fishing event he fished.

"I probably have more bass fishing experience than most of the other walleye guys in this tournament," said Good. "I did well in the Red Man tournaments in the eighties cashing checks in almost all of the events. I also live on Lake Sylvan in Brainerd. It is one of the better bass lakes in the area and I spend plenty of time fishing for them when I'm not fishing tournaments for walleyes."

Gettin' jiggy

If the bass and 'eyes are holding on deep weedlines during this event, Good feels very confident about his abilities to help his team produce a good basket of fish.

"I feel that deep weedline jigging is my specialty," said Good. "When I'm jigging a deep weedline I feel very confident in my abilities to produce fish. Of course, if we need to be fishing shallow water to catch our fish I'm comfortable with that too, but if the bite is a deep weedline bite, I will feel right at home."

Lucky to be here

"Like most of the other walleye guys, I am very excited to be fishing this event," said Good. "I feel extremely fortunate to be one of the invited walleye pros. There are an awful lot of good anglers who were not invited to fish this event."

Ability to fish a variety of techniques will help Good prosper on the Madison Chain.

"I can fish various techniques well," said Good. "I like fishing with jigs, but I can be successful fishing almost any method. Some guys get very good fishing certain methods and do not adapt well to fishing different techniques. Add to that the fact that I fish for bass quite a bit and I feel pretty good about the event."

A relaxed atmosphere may help Good's team.

"At this point I feel pretty relaxed about this tournament," said Good. "This is not like a normal tournament for me. Sure, I want to win, but this is not like trying to fish the PWT (Professional Walleye Trail) events to qualify for the Championship. The pressure will be off. Maybe that will make the fishing even better."

Good is the only PWT pro to qualify for every Championship since the PWT held its first one in 1990. He is to pro walleye fishing what Rick Clunn was to BASS before his streak of Classic appearances was broken. Good is pro walleye fishing's Iron Man.
