A rock and a Log Roll finale
By Will Snyder
Outdoor Life Magazine — July 10, 2005

CELEBRATION, Fla. — Jamie Fischer was run off the log by J.R. Salzman in the gold medal Log Rolling match and received the silver. He pulled himself out of the pond, dried off and gave his long-time girlfriend, Jill O'Brien, a precious piece of metal of her own: an engagement ring.

While the crowd was still celebrating Salzman's performance, Fischer took the microphone from an ABC Sports announcer and popped the question over the stadium's PA system. Cheers erupted as an emotional O'Brien said "yes."

After winning Games gold, Jamie Fischer popped the question.
The two met at a friend's wedding in Stillwater, Minn., which led to a year and a half courtship. Unlike many other couples at the Great Outdoor Games, O'Brien isn't involved in the timber sports at all. "I've log rolled exactly four times," she said. And she wasn't able to beat her fiancé on any of those attempts.

Prior to the question being popped, the story surrounding Fischer was his injured ankle. At a boom run event in Kansas City, Mo., he had taken a fall, severely twisting his foot. He fought through the pain, dropping two opponents on his way to the gold medal round. O'Brien had been by his side the whole time, helping to wrap the ankle and dry him off between matches.

"I can't be any happier," Fischer said.

The Games will be aired on ESPN and ABC Sports July 13-17, 2005. Click here for the broadcast schedule.
