CELEBRATION, Fla With a sterling performance by anchor Nancy Zalewski leading the way, Team USA East won the World Team Relay Mixed Timber event at ESPN's Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge Sunday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The team completed five timber sports elements in 1:04.03, beating Team International in the final round of competition to win the gold medal.
Zalewski, from Plymouth, Wis., who was Team USA East's single buck sawyer, gave her team an insurmountable lead in all three rounds as she cut through a 16-inch log with 11 strokes of the saw.
Other members of the winning team included Speed Climber Sean Duffy of Ashland, Wis., Underhand Chopper Arden Cogar of West Hamil, W.Va., Women's Boom Runner Abby Hoeschler of LaCrosse, Wis., and Men's Boom Runner Jamie Fischer of Stillwater, Minn. The team received $18,000 for the win.
Fischer won his second gold medal of the day, having earlier won the Men's Boom Run. He also earned silver in the Men's Log Rolling competition.
Hoeschler had earlier won silver in the Women's Boom Run, and Zalewski had won silver in the Women's Endurance. Cogar had won bronze in the Men's Endurance.
Four teams of five, representing five geographic regions of timber competitors, composed the field for the event. Each team member competed in a single timed discipline of timber sports with the team's objective to complete all five elements in the shortest amount of time. A qualifying round seeded two brackets, leading to semifinals and finals.
"Nancy was our anchor," said Duffy, who started each round by making a 60-foot climb. "If you look at all the different disciplines involved, we knew that she excelled the most at what she was doing. We knew that she could help us make up five to eight seconds in the race."
"My cutting ability is probably my strongest ability," said Zalewski. "But it's a team effort. Sean was climbing his heart out to start us each time, and we all worked as hard as we could to win the race. It's great to win it."
Members of Team International that won the silver medal included Jason Wynyard, New Zealand, Underhand Chop; Amanda Erdmann, Minneapolis, Minn., Women's Boom Run; Ed Braun, Canada, Men's Boom Run; Sandra Stokell, Morley, Australia, Single Buck; and Brandon Hintz, Seabeck, Wash., Speed Climb.
Team Canada beat Team USA West in the bronze medal round. Team Canada members were Cecil Starr, Underhand Chop; Tasca Braun-Parsons, Women's Boom Run; Darren Hudson, Men's Boom Run; Danielle Tkach, Single Buck; and Wade Stewart, Speed Climb.
The Games will be aired on ESPN and ABC Sports July 13-17, 2005. Click here for the broadcast schedule.
