PLAYER STATS TEE TALK

David Duval
Ryder Cup
record:
0-0-0

World Ranking:
2
The only rookie on the American roster, which is saying something considering his 11 victories since the last Ryder Cup competition. Will be under the gun for taking the lead in calling for players to get money for charity.

Jim Furyk
Ryder Cup
record:
1-2-0

World Ranking:
14
One of the most consistent players in 1997 and 1998, but not the case in 1999. Won't be playing with Tiger Woods, since Fluff Cowan is his caddie. Good in team competition because of his accuracy, but not a very strong closer.

Tom Lehman
Ryder Cup
record:
3-2-2

World Ranking:
23
The toughest player on the U.S. team who fought his way into a captain's choice selection with four second-place finishes this season. Hasn't won a tournament since 1996, when he was player of the year with the British Open and Tour Championship crowns.

Justin Leonard
Ryder Cup
record:
0-2-2

World Ranking:
13
Has been a huge disappointment in his Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup matches. Probably the shortest player off the tee on the team, but a quiet, gutsy performer. Hasn't won since the 1998 Players Championship 18 months ago.

Davis Love III
Ryder Cup
record:
5-8-0

World Ranking:
4
Health is big issue for Love, who hasn't prepared for the competition because of a pinched nerve in his back. Won just once in 1998 and not at all in 1999, although he has three seconds -- including The Masters -- and 11 top-10s.

Jeff Maggert
Ryder Cup
record:
4-3-0

World Ranking:
17
Proved he can play match play by winning the first World Golf Championships event, but has played poorly since then. Barely escaped being knocked from squad by Bob Estes and, since he has never been a closer, probably wouldn't have been selected for the team.

Phil Mickelson
Ryder Cup
record:
4-1-2

World Ranking:
12
Season has been interrupted by fatherhood, and has yet to win in 1999. Reputation as not playing well in big events went out the window with second-place finish at U.S. Open, but has no majors and has never played on a winning team.

Mark O'Meara
Ryder Cup
record:
4-7-1

World Ranking:
10
The winner of two majors in 1998 has been mediocre at best in 1999. So busy crossing the globe and cashing in on his success that his game has gone to pot. Hasn't contended since March. Most experienced player on the U.S. team should be paired with Tiger Woods.

Steve Pate
Ryder Cup
record:
0-1-1

World Ranking:
28
Somewhat surprising selection as captain's choice, Pate has a fiery attitude that should help team. Reached semifinals of World Match Play and should have won earlier this year until Duval shot 59 on Sunday to beat him at Bob Hope.

Payne Stewart
Ryder Cup
record:
8-7-1

World Ranking:
8
Made getting back to Ryder Cup his top priority in 1999 and responded by winning second U.S. Open. With Tom Lehman, will be the behind-the-scenes leaders waving the flag. Has become a great iron player and putter this year in winning twice.

Hal Sutton
Ryder Cup
record:
3-3-3

World Ranking:
11
Tuned up for first Ryder Cup in 12 years by dominating Canadian Open, leading by as much as six shots on Sunday. A model of consistency, with 12 top-10 finishes in 21 starts this year, topped only by Woods. The best iron player on tour is at peace with himself.

Tiger Woods
Ryder Cup
record:
1-3-1

World Ranking:
1
The most dominant player in the world, Woods has a lot to prove after a poor effort at Valderrama and in the Presidents Cup. An outspoken critic of the hoopla surrounding the Ryder Cup. Woods won three U.S. Amateurs, so match play is his game.
