Tom Scherrer's reward for winning the Kemper Open on Sunday? Thirty-six holes of golf Monday in a sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open.
Sectional qualifying takes place Monday and Tuesday at 12 courses across the nation. Players are seeking one of 86 available spots for the field at Pebble Beach in two weeks.
Seventy players are exempt from qualifying for the national championship, set for June 15-18.
Scherrer is among 193 players vying for 35 slots at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. Others at Scherrer's site include Billy Andrade, Robert Allenby, Rich Beem, Stewart Cink, Glen Day, Brad Faxon, Scott Hoch, Jay Haas, Andrew Magee, Shigeki Maruyama and Kirk Triplett.
Woodmont has drawn the largest group -- and the largest group of regulars on the PGA Tour -- because of its proximity to Potomac, Md., site of the Kemper Open.
Other sites being used Monday include Lake Merced outside San Francisco, Colimbine Country Club in Denver, Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., Knollwood Club outside Chicago, and Clovernook in Cincinnati.
Sites being used Tuesday are Settindown Creek in Atlanta, Boone Valley in St. Louis, Canoe Brook in Summit, N.J., Pumpkin Ridge outside Portland, Ore., Butler Country Club in Butler, Pa., and Shadow Hawk in Houston.
