Charles Howell III, the NCAA champion who finished second -- as an amateur -- in a development league tournament two weeks ago, picked up his first professional paycheck Sunday at the Greater Hartford Open.
Howell finished 6-under, in a tie for 32nd, winning $13,627.
Had he been a pro in the Buy.com tour event in Greensboro, N.C., he could have picked up $36,000. But Howell said Sunday, "if I had stayed amateur and shot 6-under I'd be chewing myself out."
Raised in the shadows of Augusta National, Howell shot his first sub-70 tournament round at the age of 10 and won five tournaments before his 11th birthday. He went on to hold numerous Georgia prep
school titles.
He won the NCAA title last month with a 23-under-par total, breaking the previous record by six shots and helping Oklahoma State University win its ninth team title.
Winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award as the national collegiate player of the year, Howell also was named the Big 12 Conference male athlete of the year.
Howell, whose father is a pediatric surgeon, said despite the winnings Sunday, "with all my dad spent on golf, I'm still in the hole."
He plans to hire an agent and buy new clothes and equipment, he said.
"This was my last round with an Oklahoma State bag," he said.
