Never bet against experience at Torrey Pines, which was proven again this year. Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III and Tiger Woods are all former champions, and all finished in the top four this year.
For Mickelson, the numbers are starting to become staggering -- especially for the "best player without a major." He became the first three-time champion at this event and the first to successfully defend the title since J.C. Snead in 1976.
Mickelson also won for the 18th time in his career, moving him into a tie for 38th in career victories. That puts him even with Greg Norman, trailing only Woods (24) among active players.
It also gives Mickelson five wins over the past 12 months, a staggering number topped only by Woods.
For Love, the close call moved him to the top of the money list, joining Steve Stricker and Brad Faxon as players surpassing $1 million in earnings.
While Mickelson and Love can take away confidence for another week of solid play -- they dueled to the finish last week at Pebble Beach, as well -- the collapse of Frank Lickliter in sudden death could haunt him.
Getting win No. 1 is difficult on the PGA Tour, and Lickliter has never had a better opportunity. When Mickelson's drive went into the canyon on the third playoff hole, Lickliter showed his nerves by joining him in the shrubs.
For Woods, the streak has now reached seven events without a victory, his longest stretch in nearly two years. And the elusive first win won't come next week, when he skips the Bob Hope Classic. That leaves just the Nissan Open at Riviera left if Woods hopes to win on the West Coast swing.
Further down the leaderboard, the Buick proved successful once again for Kevin Sutherland. He tied for 12th, after finishes of third, fourth and fifth the previous three years.
