Joe Durant had the perfect answer for anybody who thought his win at the Bob Hope Classic was a fluke. With a win at Doral in his next start, Durant proved he has become a legitimate player on the PGA Tour.
Say what you want about the easy pin placements and the pristine conditions at the Bob Hope, when Durant went 36-under over 90 holes. The Blue Monster was vicious on the weekend, yet Durant went 67-65 to pull away from the field.
The win moves Durant to the top of the season money list and an invitation to The Masters in April. His only appearance at Augusta was in 1999, where he won the par-3 contest early in the week, then went 22-over in two rounds to miss the cut.
Among the challengers, Davis Love III added his fifth top-10 of the season, while Jeff Sluman, Vijay Singh and Mike Weir all made the top 10 for the third time. In fact, Singh now has three top-three finishes and a pair of wins on the European Tour as he gears up for a title defense at Augusta.
And Nick Price, playing for just the third time this year, showed his game is in fine shape -- as usual.
Chris Perry, who tied for 25th, made it 8-for-8 in cuts made this year, the best total on the PGA Tour.
Stephen Ames, who entered the final round in a tie for seventh, withdrew with a rib injury. This is the second time in 13 months that Ames has withdrawn on Sunday with a chance to win. A shoulder injury at last year's Bob Hope Classic forced him out of the final round, when he was just two off the pace.
Durant's win made him the first two-time winner this season, earning the honor in the 10th event on the schedule. This is the first year since 1994 that no one has left the West Coast swing with two wins.
