One of the oldest events on the Senior Tour arrives this week with a new name but the same course.

The FleetBoston Classic, known as the BankBoston Classic in recent years, begins Friday at Nashawtuc Country Club in the outskirts of Boston. It's a traditional golf course that favors the better putters.

Last year's tournament was one of the most surprising of the season, thanks to first-time winner Tom McGinnis. The Senior Tour rookie came out of nowhere to topple Hale Irwin in a playoff.

McGinnis had a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 1970s on the PGA Tour. As a Senior Tour rookie, he had a pair of eighth-place finishes as his highlight. Then came Nashawtuc.

McGinnis shots rounds of 69-69-67 to tie Irwin, catching him with a birdie at the final hole of regulation. Then in a playoff of David and Goliath, McGinnis hit his approach on the second playoff hole to within four feet, made the birdie putt and walked away as champion.

McGinnis has struggled during the 2000 campaign, with just one top-10 finish in 26 events. But he can look to history of this event for encouragement. There has been numerous repeat winners through the years, including Don January (1983-1984), Chi Chi Rodriguez (1986-1987-1988), Bob Charles (1989-1990) and Irwin (1997-1998).

Irwin is back in search of his third Boston title, looking for another win to catch Lee Trevino for most in Senior Tour history. He is also battling Bruce Fleisher for player of the year and money titles.

The tournament has drawn most of the top players, as well as popular stars like Arnold Palmer, who is coming off a final-round 70 at the Utah Showdown. It is the second time Palmer has shot his age in competition.

Next week, the Senior Tour heads for a three-week swing through the Midwest, starting with the Foremost Insurance Classic in Ada, Mich. Stops in Indiana and Ohio follow as the Senior season begins to wind down.
