After a one-week break, the Seniors return with their second consecutive major championship this week, a tournament with a 63-year history.

Until last year, this event could have been called the Hale Irwin Invitational. Irwin had dominated at PGA National, winning three consecutive years after turning the eligible age of 50. Irwin won by two shots for his first title in 1996, then romped to a record 12-stroke win one year later and a dominating seven-shot margin in 1998.

Last year, Irwin finished in a tie for 11th as Allen Doyle won the first major of his career.

Doyle shot a sizzling final-round 64 to overtake Vicente Fernandez and Bruce Fleisher for the title. Despite an early double-bogey on No. 4 and another bogey on the back nine, Doyle dominated on Sunday. He had nine birdies and a chip-in eagle on No. 10.

His 64 was the lowest final round in the history of the event, which began in 1937.

Doyle had some help from his competitors, as well. Both Fernandez and Fleisher made double-bogeys on the par-3 15th when both found the water.

Fernandez ended up in second, while Fleisher shared third with Jose Maria Canizares. Dana Quigley and Bruce Summerhays tied for fifth.

All of last year's key players will be back this year, along with some new names. At the top of that list are Tom Kite, who won the year's first major two weeks ago at The Tradition, and Tom Watson, who battled Kite for five holes of sudden death in Scottsdale.

Kite finally showed the form many were expecting of the former U.S. Open champion and 18-time winner on the PGA Tour. And Watson making a run at another major was no surprise, since that's how he made his name on the regular tour.

Others in the field to keep an eye on include rookies Lanny Wadkins and Andy North, and a pair of elder statesmen coming off big weeks at The Masters. Tommy Aaron, 63, became the oldest man to make the cut at Augusta, while Jack Nicklaus flirted with the leaderboard early in the week at the age of 60. Both men faltered on the weekend, however.

The PGA Seniors' Championship will seem a little crowded to the regular players on the Senior Tour. While most events field just 78 players -- including The Tradition -- the year's second major features a 144-player field and the first cut of the season.

Following this event, the Seniors get back to regular tour stops next week, starting with the Las Vegas Senior Classic on a pair of classy TPC courses.
