Midwest St. Francis High (Ill.) volleyball coach Peg Kopec reach a milestone last Thursday when she recorded her 700th career victory in a rout over Providence-St. Mel High. Kopec's career mark is 700-181-2 in 26 years of coaching. ... Champlin Park High (Minn.) senior running back Riza Mahmoud gained 439 rushing yards and scored eight touchdowns on 37 carries in last Tuesday's 61-50 playoff victory over Elk River High. Mahmoud's total was the second highest in state history behind Brainerd High's Brian Day, who ran for 461 yards in a 1996 contest. ... Hill-Murray High (Minn.) receiver Lee Clintsman made 14 catches for 344 yards, but it wasn't enough to lead his team to a win last Tuesday. Hill-Murray lost, 49-42, to Mahtomedi High. Clintsman's 344 receiving yards broke the state single-game record of 307 yards held by Robby Hedeen of Cannon Falls High.
Northeast Branford High (Conn.) field hockey coach Cathy McGuirk got her 300th win last Wednesday and received a cake and flowers to celebrate. McGuirk is in her 24th season as the field hockey coach at Branford. Her husband, John, also hit the 300-win mark in his coaching career. He was a softball coach for 26 seasons. ... Huntington High (W.Va.) football coach Bob Sang's career is over after a 28-7 loss to Spring Valley High on Friday. Sang had been coaching for nearly the last half century. He coached at Huntington High since the consolidation between Old Huntington High and Huntington East High in 1996. Prior to that, he was the coach of Huntington East from 1967-95, Huntington High from 1960-67, Gallia Academy (Ohio) from 1951-57 and an assistant at Ashland High (Ky.) from 1951-57.
Southeast Barring an injury, Commerce High's (Ga.) Monte Williams will become the state's all-time leading rusher this weekend against rival Jefferson High. Williams ran for 246 yards in last Friday's win over Wesleyan High and is 83 yards shy of eclipsing Robert Toomer's record of 7,868 yards. ... The Lakeland High (Fla.) football team won its 54th straight game Friday night, but the Dreadnaughts (8-0) had to beat Bradenton Southeast High and standout quarterback Adrian McPherson, 35-28, to extend the streak. No. 2 Lakeland has posted four consecutive undefeated seasons, and its last loss came to Southeast in 1995. The bad news, however, is that Lakeland senior quarterback Kedrick Frazier left the game in the first half with a separated shoulder and will probably miss the remainder of the season. ... White Station High (Tenn.) 6-foot-3 shooting guard Ernest Shelton chose to leave the state and will sign with the University of Alabama instead of Tennessee.
Southwest
West The saga of Mater Dei High (Calif.) 6-foot-11 center Jamal Sampson finally appears to be over. After going back and forth between college destinations numerous times during the recruiting process, it looks as though the big man has finally settled on Cal, according to his coach, Gary McKnight. Sampson averaged 14 points and 11 boards per game last season. ... Bonita Vista High (Calif.) volleyball standout Jennifer Saleaumua will attend the University of Arizona next year. The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter chose the Wildcats over Nebraska, Hawaii and Colorado State. ... Mike Lee, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound shooting guard from Jefferson High (Ore.), committed to the University of Kansas after visiting the school this past weekend. Lee chose the Jayhawks over Oregon.
