Girls' Basketball Preseason
All-Americans

First Team

C - Kara Braxton, Sr.
Westview High (Beaverton, Ore.), 6-5
Braxton, along with twin sister Kim, form the nation's best post combo. Kara was last season's USA Today Oregon Player of the Year after she averaged 19 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game. The University of Florida-bound Braxton is a gem in the Pacific Northwest.
Garden City High (N.Y.) guard Bethany LeSueur is on the SchoolSports.com Preseason All-American first team.

G - Loree Moore, Sr.
Narbonne High (Harbor City, Calif.), 5-9
Moore, a USA Junior teammate of Braxton, averaged 13.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 8.7 assists and 6.2 steals per game last season, leading Harbor City to a perfect 34-0 record. Moore will attend Tennessee next year, but not before terrorizing high school opponents for one more season with perhaps the nation's top all-around game.

G - Bethany LeSueur, Sr.
Garden City High (Garden City, N.Y.), 5-11
LeSueur has never been a sleeper in New York, not after scoring 1,000 points as a freshman. But an outstanding summer and pub in ESPN Magazine has alerted the nation to LeSueur's abilities. The pride of Garden City is a two-time Nike All-American and will attend Virginia next year.

F - Shyra Ely, Sr.
Ben Davis High (Indianapolis, Ind.), 6-2
Ely lost out to teammate Ashley Allen for Indiana Player of the Year last season, but Ely is widely considered the nation's top forward this year. Tennessee coach Pat Summitt will have Ely in the fold with the Lady Vols next season. She averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds per game last season.

F - Katy Flecky, Sr.
Highlands Ranch High (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), 6-2
Last season, Flecky was the Colorado Player of the Year after averaging 19 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots per contest. She'll attend Notre Dame next year.

Second Team

G - Claire Droesch, Sr.
Christ the King High (New York, N.Y.), 5-10
Droesch is in the mold of some of her male counterparts in the fabled New York City point guard pantheon. She's flashy, and she's nasty. Droesch, who surprised a lot of people by committing to Boston College, is the reigning Player of the Year in New York after dropping 26 points a game last season.

C - Winter Whitely, Sr.
Holy Innocents Episcopal School (Atlanta, Ga.), 6-2
Whitely tallied 24 points and 10 boards per game last season and is rated right up there with first team center Kara Braxton. Whitely will play for Duke next season.

G - Cappie Pondexter, Sr.
Marshall High (Chicago, Ill.), 5-9
Poindexter breaks more ankles than a drainage pipe on a soccer field. The 5-foot-9 senior was named Ms. Basketball in Illinois last season after scoring 21 points and grabbing eight rebounds per game. Rutgers will be her next stop.

G/F - Seimone Augustus, Jr.
Capital High (Baton Rouge, La.), 6-1
Augustus was the 4A Player of the Year in Louisiana -- a remarkable feat for a sophomore -- after averaging 26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists per game in '99-00. She is perhaps the top guard in the vaunted class of 2002, which is being talked up as one of the best ever.

F - Katie Robinette, Sr.
South Sioux City High (South Sioux City, Neb.), 6-2
Robinette led South Sioux City to the state title as a junior, shooting 60 percent from the field. Robinette, who will attend Nebraska next season, was named Nebraska Player of the Year for her efforts in '99-00.

Third Team

C - Gillian Goring, Jr.
Germantown Academy (Drexel Hill, Pa.), 6-7
Memo to all college coaches: Please pick up that jaw you dropped over at Germantown Academy. Kids are tripping over it. But Goring, the nation's top-rated junior, is the one making college recruiters trip, thanks to a skill you can't teach (she's 6-foot-7) and a resume that already includes two Nike All-America appearances.

G - Ashley Allen, Sr.
Ben Davis High (Indianapolis, Ind.), 5-10
Allen may not get the pub of some of the other players in the class of 2001, but she was named Indiana Player of the Year last season and will re-team with first team forward Shyra Ely to form the basis of 90 percent of all nightmares associated with girls' hoop coaches in the Hoosier State. Allen is still deciding between Arkansas and Ohio State.

G - Monique Currie, Sr.
The Bullis School (Washington, D.C.), 5-10
Currie, who is headed to Duke, has had a penchant for finding the basket in her three years at the Bullis School. She has never averaged less than 17 points per game and will be the top player in the D.C./Baltimore area, one of the nation's most competitive regions.

C - Azella Perryman, Sr.
East Anchorage High (Anchorage, Alaska), 6-3
Perryman is widely seen as one of the top 10 players in the nation after being named Alaska's Player of the Year in '99-00. Perryman will eschew the frozen tundra of Anchorage for the greener pastures of Stanford next season.

F/C - Kelly Greathouse, Sr.
Buena High (Ventura, Calif.), 6-3
Greathouse averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game last year and will pass over Stanford to go east and play at N.C. State next season. Greathouse shot 47 percent from 3-point range last season.
