Records falling as South Bend Washington stays on top

Even at the high school level, sports milestones can come complete with media circus, huge crowds filling the stands and presents, balloons or speeches. While some athletes get to keep the game ball, others hope that mom or dad captured the moment on their point-and-shoot camera.

Each week, athletes across the country break school records or state records and it's no easy feat at any level. On the heels of New Leadership (Springfield, Mass.) star Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir breaking Rebecca Lobo's state scoring record, here is a small collection of some other recent milestones and broken records:

• In a Jan. 20 win against Cathedral, Heritage Christian (Indianapolis) senior Emily Anderson scored the 1,000th point of her career during the Eagles' 75-51 win. Anderson, who scored 15 points in the game, became the third class of 2009 Eagle to reach 1,000 points in her career, following Connecticut-bound Kelly Faris and Butler-bound Claire Freeman. Anderson is heading to Hillsdale next year, a Division II program in Michigan.

• Illinois-bound Destiny Williams, a senior at Benton Harbor (Mich.), now owns her school's rebounding record after passing the 1,000 board mark in Thursday's 75-57 win against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. Williams grabbed 23 in that game, pushing her total to 1,013. The No. 8 player in the class of 2009, Williams averages 31.2 points per game and has 1,613 career points, 32 shy of breaking the current school record.

Williams and her teammates go on the road Thursday as the Tigers head to South Bend (Ind.) and battle No. 1 South Bend Washington on the Panthers' senior night.

• In December, junior Briana Brown claimed the King (Stamford, Conn.) all-time scoring leader title with the first 30-point game of her career. Since then, the guard has rattled off another 88 points in four games, running her school record to 1,481 points through Sunday.

• A different kind of record was set Jan. 13, when Morton (Ill.) senior Brooke Bisping missed her second and third attempts from the free-throw line in a 69-54 win against Metamora. Including her first shot in the game, the Bradley-bound guard ran the Illinois state record for consecutive made free throws to 53.

• In Minnesota, the chase continues for Tayler Hill. The Minneapolis South senior is now 159 points from claiming the state's all-time scoring record of 3,694 points, currently held by University of Minnesota junior Katie Ohm. Hill is averaging 31.3 points per game this season.

And one

Then-No. 34 Brea Olinda (Brea, Calif.) avenged a December loss to then-No. 29 Cajon (Calif.) with a 58-47 win Saturday. Junior Kelsey Harris led Brea with 16 points, while senior Kendall Rodriguez (15), sophomore Justine Hartman (13) and senior Jonae Ervin (10) all scored in double digits. California-bound Layshia Clarendon led Cajon with 25 points. It was Cajon's first loss of the season.

The Marquee

It's a busy week in Indiana, with a game between two top-15 teams leading the way. No. 12 Bolingbrook (Ill.) stacked its schedule this season and this week is no exception. Bolingbrook, which lost to No. 1 South Bend Washington and No. 2 Ben Davis earlier this year, heads to Indianapolis for Saturday's game against No. 4 Heritage Christian.

The Eagles, no slouches in their scheduling either, faced Indiana's reigning 4A state champion, Carmel (Ind.), Tuesday night, giving Carmel a test before Friday's league game against No. 2 Ben Davis (Indianapolis). The Giants are out for revenge after losing the regional title to Carmel a year ago, but they don't want to expend all their energy as they face 15-0 Terre Haute South Monday, possibly for the league title.

Farther east, No. 30 Butler (Matthews, N.C.) travels to No. 40 East Mecklenburg (Charlotte, N.C.) Tuesday. Butler will try and beat the Eagles for the third time this season. Saturday, No. 17 Archbishop Carroll (Radnor, Pa.) heads to Middle Village, N.Y., for a lunchtime game against No. 50 Christ the King .

Off the bounce

The Sparkman (Harvest, Ala.) girls were mistakenly credited with a loss sustained by the Sparkman boys' team. The Senators beat the Butler girls, 65-30, Jan. 16 and have continued their Alabama dominance to run up a 26-0 ranking through Sunday. … With Sunday's win against H.D. Woodson (Washington, D.C.), No. 6 Murry Bergtraum (New York City) is up to 72 consecutive victories. … Then-No. 27 Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) survived a 21-12 fourth quarter run by Chatsworth for a 62-59 win Saturday. Ariya Crook-Williams, Poly's sophomore point guard back from a concussion sustained in December, led the Jackrabbits with 14 points while junior guard Brittany Wilson was named player of the game with 13 points and four steals. Thaddesia Southall also scored 13 for Poly. Gennifer Brandon scored 30 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and nabbed four steals for Chatsworth. … Midwest City (Okla.) won last week's Jenks Invitational with victories against in-state opponents Stillwater, Sapulpa and Jenks to remain the only undefeated 6A team in Oklahoma. Tournament MVP Richa Jackson, a 6-0 junior, led Midwest City with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 51-35 championship win Saturday against Jenks. … Iroquois (Louisville, Ky.) beat Lexington Christian (Lexington, Ky.) 63-59 Saturday behind 23 points and 11 rebounds from Kentucky-bound Adia Mathies.

Introducing

Shabazz (Newark, N.J.) debuts at No. 26 after a 69-57 win against then-No. 9 Potters House Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Substitutions

A loss to Del City (Okla.) drops Union (Tulsa, Okla.), now 11-2, from the FAB 50.
