MASON CITY, Iowa -- Jeff Clement of Marshalltown High School in Iowa hit his 71st career home run to set the national prep record on Wednesday.
Clement, the 18-year-old catcher who was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of last month's draft, broke the record of 70 homers set by New York Yankees prospect Drew Henson in 1998 with Brighton High School in Michigan.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Clement was nonchalant about the accomplishment.
''I don't play baseball to hit home runs. I play to win,'' Clement said after the Bobcats swept a doubleheader. ''I just try to put a good swing on the ball and sometimes they go out.''
Clement, who is expected to play at Southern California next season rather than sign with the Twins, homered off Mason City's Brady Foster in the third inning of the second game of the doubleheader.
''I started it at his shoulder and it broke over the middle of the plate,'' Foster said. ''I knew the minute it left my hand it was going out.''
Clement received a standing ovation as he rounded the bases, and his teammates as well as Foster and several other Mason City players greeted him at the plate, acknowledging his feat.
Clement was given the ball, which Kevin Adair of Marshalltown recovered after it sailed over the right-field scoreboard and onto a roof of a building about 50 feet from the edge of the outfield.
The teams are completing their state regionals schedule, which runs through July.
Clement, who pitched in the first game, also set the national high school record for career walks with his 191st last week. |
