Like a mini-Breeders' Cup

ARCADIA, Cali. -- The Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be coming up in two weeks but this Saturday the racing spotlight will be on California's championship day of racing at Santa Anita as Oak Tree hosts the 15th California Cup Day. As Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert describes it, "Cal Cup Day is like a mini-Breeders' Cup."

The event features 10 stakes races worth $1,325,000 exclusively for thoroughbreds bred in the Golden State. Oak Tree will be offering a $1-million guaranteed Pick 6 pool and a $500,000 guaranteed Pick 4. Post time for the first race Saturday is 12:30 p.m. PT at Santa Anita.

"This is the day that spotlights the California Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry," said Doug Burge, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. "It's a day everyone in our industry looks forward to in the state and it's been a huge hit with our race fans. There will be a special infield party on race day for our industry supporters in the state and we expect over 2,000 guests."

ESPN will be on hand to cover Cal Cup Day with a recap in an "At The Track" segment of the Wire-To-Wire show on ESPN2 next Wednesday at 2pm Eastern, 11am Pacific.

Cal Cup Day represents almost every division and distance over the 10 stakes races with the richest event being the $250,000 California Cup Classic.

Entered at Wednesday morning's draw for the races were the last two Cal Cup Classic winners including the 2002 winner, Calkins Road and last year's upset Classic winner at 10-1, Tizbud, who will be making his first start this year for trainer John Sadler. The-5-year-old son of Cee's Tizzy is owned by Cees Stable LLC. Tizbud is the younger brother of 1998 Cal Cup Classic winner Budroyale and the 2000 and 2001 Breeders' Cup Classic champion Tiznow.

The top Northern California invader for the Classic is Yougottawanna from trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's powerful stable with Hall of Famer Russell Baze coming down for the ride.

Excess Summer was made the 5/2 morning line favorite for the big race.

Also featured on the card will be the $175,000 John C. Mabee California Cup Mile on the turf. There are three races with $150,000 purses including the Dodge Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint, the TOC/CTT California Cup Matron for fillies and mares three-and-up and the John Deere California Cup Distaff at 6 _ furlongs on the turf course.

The Matron boasts a quality field including the defending champion, Royal Chosen. She will be challenged by multiple graded stakes winnings fillies and mares like Yearly Report, Summer Wind Dancer and Dream of Summer.

Juveniles run in a pair of $125,000 stakes, the Budweiser California Cup Juvenile for colts and geldings and the Robert H. Walter California Cup for Juvenile fillies. Both races are at a mile-and-a-sixteenth.

There are two other races run on the grass, the $100,000 California Cup Distance Handicap for fillies and mares going a mile-and-a-quarter on the turf and the XTRA 690AM/Fox 1150 California Cup Starter Handicap for $50,000 at a mile-and-a-half. Another starter handicap event is the California Cup Sprint at six-furlongs for $50,000.

"California Cup Day is always the highlight of our $10-million dollars restricted stakes program and our 15th renewal this Saturday is shaping up to be one of our best ever," Burge said after the post position draw. "We have large, competitive fields with some 100 horses entered in our 10 state bred stakes races. It's going to be a great day of racing!"
