Charismatic beats out Daylami

Charismatic, who broke a leg while failing to win the Triple Crown, is the winner of the Horse of the Year award over Daylami, who was spectacular in his only U.S. start in 1999.

"I think he deserves it," trainer Bob Baffert said of Charismatic, trained by D. Wayne Lukas and owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis.

Baffert won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with the Lewis' Silver Charm in 1997 and with Mike Pegram's Real Quiet in 1998. Each of those colts finished second in the Belmont Stakes and was voted champion 3-year-old, but not Horse of the Year.

"You can't look back," Baffert said when asked if he was disappointed that his colts didn't get Horse of the Year. "It's like when the tote board says 'official,' it's over.

Two Baffert-trained horses -- 2-year-old filly Chilukki and 3-year-old filly Silverbulletday -- also got Eclipse Awards on Monday night at a dinner at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., and he beat Lukas for Trainer of the Year.

"I have to say to you, quite frankly, when you win two-thirds of the Triple Crown and finish third in the Belmont Stakes under the conditions he did, he deserves the honor."

The strapping Derby-Preakness winner, also voted champion 3-year-old, finished third in the Belmont Stakes, 1½ lengths behind winner Lemon Drop Kid, while sustaining two fractures of his left front leg. The breakdown apparently happened with about an eighth-mile remaining.

His record for the year was four wins, two seconds and a third, with earnings of $2,007,404.

Charismatic won a split vote over Daylami for Horse of the Year. Charismatic got the majority votes of the Daily Racing Form and National Turfwriters Association, while Daylami, who won the Breeders' Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park, got the vote of the racing secretaries of National Thoroughbred Racing Association member tracks.

Each vote was worth one point.

First-place votes for division champions were worth 10 points, with five points for second and one for third.

Charismatic was a unanimous choice as 3-year-old champion colt or gelding, Daylami was the unanimous pick for turf champion. He is owned by the Godolphin stable of Sheiks Mohammed, Maktoum and Hamdan al Maktoum of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Other equine winners were Anees, 2-year-old colt or gelding; Victory Gallop, older colt, horse or gelding; Beautiful Pleasure, older filly or mare; Artax, sprinter; Soaring Softly, female turf horse; and Lonesome Glory, steeplechase horse.

All of them were unanimous selections except Victory Gallop, who got 25 points and first-place votes by the DRF and NTRA. Behrens got the NTWA's first-place ballot and totaled 20 points.

Baffert got the votes of the DRF and NTRA while Lukas got the vote of the NTWA.

Other human award winners were Jorge Chavez, jockey, Ariel Smith, apprentice jockey, Frank Stronich, owner, and William S. Farish and partners, breeder.

Each vote for the human awards was worth one point, except for breeder, which was selected by a committee.
