Megans Bluff wins Arlington Oaks

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Trainer John Hennig is 1 for 1 at Arlington International.

Megan's Bluff
Megans Bluff cost only $30,000 as a yearling of 1998 but has earned close to $200,000.
Hennig saddled Megans Bluff, his first Arlington starter in a 32-year training career, to win the Grade 3 $125,000 Arlington Oaks on Saturday.

An evenly matched race on paper, the Oaks turned into a rout. Megans Bluff relaxed in third behind the two pacesetters, Robbin Banks and Polish Penny, was asked to run just before the quarter pole, and quickly drew clear. The stretch run was no contest, with Megans Bluff easily drawing away to a seven-length win.

Instinct, a filly still eligible for her preliminary allowance condition, finished fastest among the other five Oaks starters and got up for second by more than two lengths over the longshot My Turn Kissin. Fiesty Countess, the favored filly, made a small move on the backstretch but flattened out and finished fifth.

A 3-year-old by Pine Bluff, Megans Bluff paid $5.60 as the second choice. Leading rider Mark Guidry was aboard for his first graded stakes win of the meeting. In winning for the fourth time in her last five starts, Megans Bluff ran 1 1/8 miles in a good 1:50.22.

Megans Bluff, who trains for Hennig at the Sports Spectrum in Louisville, almost didn't run in the Oaks, having been entered two weeks ago in the Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park, Hennig said.

Unhappy with Megans Bluff's post position, Hennig scratched her from the Ellis race and pointed her for Arlington. "That would have been kind of close to her last race, anyway," Hennig said. "The extra two weeks made all the difference."

Megans Bluff, owned by James Routsongs, cost only $30,000 as a yearling of 1998 but has earned close to $200,000, nearly all of it this year, in her 10 starts.
