Tiznow romps in Super Derby

BOSSIER CITY, La. -- Tiznow ran to his 4-5 odds in Saturday's $500,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, setting a track record while winning the Grade 1 race by six lengths over Belmont Stakes winner Commendable.

Tiznow set a track record in his Super Derby win.
Mass Market, who lagged far back during the early running, finished well to be third, a length farther back. He was followed by Clever Brick, Chris's Bad Boy, and White Star.

Tiznow ($3.60) covered the 1 1/4 miles over a fast track in 1:59.84, lowering the mark of 2:00.20 set by Gate Dancer in the 1985 Super Derby and then equaled by Mecke in the 1995 running.

Tiznow hopped out of the gate at the start to get away a step slowly, but took the lead shortly thereafter. He was joined from the outside by Commendable early on the backstretch, and the pair raced on even terms through six furlongs in 1:10.48. Approaching the quarter pole Tiznow started to edge clear of Commendable, getting the mile in 1:35. Tiznow drew off in the stretch, jockey Chris McCarron merely showing him the whip.

"This horse has such a huge, fluid stride," said McCarron, who rode Tiznow for trainer Jay Robbins. "He never feels as fast as he's going. He's extremely deceiving as far as how fast he's getting across the ground. It's a good way to be deceiving, though."

Tiznow is not Breeders' Cup eligible, and would need to be supplemented to the race. Robbins said he would wait to see how Tiznow came out of the Super Derby before making any future plans.

Although Commendable could not keep pace with Tiznow in the stretch, jockey Pat Day was not disappointed with his horse's performance.

"My horse ran a good race," said Day. "He ran hard when I put him to task."

Tiznow, a full brother to multiple Grade 2 winner Budroyale, earned $300,000 for the first Grade 1 victory of his career, which improved his record to three wins from seven starts for earnings of $725,550. He races for his breeder, Cecilia Straub Rubens, and Michael Cooper.

Attendance Saturday was a meet-high 15,438.
