Marshall Jenney dies, co-breeder of Danzig

Marshall Jenney, owner of Derry Meeting Farm in Pennsylvania and the co-breeder of Danzig, died Sunday night at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, after a brief illness. He was 60.

Jenney had operated Derry Meeting Farm in Cochranville, Pa., since 1967, developing it from a vegetable farm into a successful Thoroughbred nursery.

Among the horses he bred was Danzig, whom he co-bred with Will Farish and who went on to become one of the world's leading sires. Jenney also bred three-time English and Irish champion Mrs. Penny, foaled current leading sire Storm Cat for owner W. T. Young, and French and English champion Selkirk for owner George Strawbridge Jr.

Other stakes-winners raised at Derry Meeting include 1994 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tikkanen, Grade 1 winner Unaccounted For, and graded stakes winner Alice Springs. Derry Meeting Farm's homebred stakes winners include Mrs. Jenney, a daughter of Mrs. Penny who later produced Unaccounted For.

Jenney, a Delaware native, grew up in the mid-Atlantic horse country, was immersed in the fox hunting and Thoroughbred racing communities, and even, for a time, rode in steeplechase races as an amateur jockey.

Following his graduation from Princeton in 1963 and a stint as an investment banker in New York, Jenney returned to racing in earnest with his purchase of Derry Meeting. He gradually expanded the property from just over 120 acres to more than 400.

A fixture at major Thoroughbred sales, Jenney had some of his most notable successes as a consignor at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga yearling auction, where he consigned Danzig, Unbridled's Song, and Mrs. Penny, among others.

Jenney is survived by his wife, Bettina; daughters Anne West Jenney Darrow and Laura Syminton Rowe; stepdaughters Lindsay Scott and Sally Jenney Scott; father John Lord King Jenney; brother John Lord King Jenney Jr.; and eight grandchildren.
