Richly Blended tops late Derby noms

Seven 3-year-olds, including Gotham Stakes winner Richly Blended and Rebel Stakes winner Crafty Shaw, on Tuesday were announced as late nominees to this year's Triple Crown, bringing the total number of nominees to 447.

Some 440 horses were nominated in January for $600. It cost $6,000 to wait until this past weekend to nominate a horse to the May 5 Kentucky Derby, May 19 Preakness Stakes, and June 9 Belmont Stakes. The record number of total nominees is 452, which included 30 late nominees, set in 1986. This year's 440 early nominations was a record for that deadline.

Richly Blended, trained by Ben Perkins Jr., has won all three of his starts. He runs next in the $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 14.

Crafty Shaw and late nominees Arctic Boy and Son of Rocket finished first, second, and fourth, respectively, in the Rebel. All three are expected to return in the $500,000 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn on April 14.

The final three late nominees are Camden Park, who finished fourth in Turfway Park's Spiral Stakes on March 24, Cherokee Kim, and True Concern.
