LEXINGTON, Ky. A lightly raced colt who overcame foot problems, and a 54-year-old jockey whose career was near bottom just a few years ago, are headed for the Kentucky Derby after teaming up for a front-running victory in the Blue Grass Stakes.
"This is kind of a like a dream come true," 54-year-old Laffit Pincay Jr. said Saturday after winning on Millennium Wind at Keeneland. "It would be great if I could win another Kentucky Derby." Pincay, who revived his career to become history's winningest jockey (9,114 victories), has ridden in 19 Derbies, winning in 1984 on Swale. He last rode in America's race in 1994, finishing 13th on Valiant Nature. "I wish the Derby was on this track because he loves this track," trainer David Hofmans said. Millennium Wind, who healed from blisters and sores on all four heels that were caused by a fungus, took charge at the start and controlled the 1 1-8-mile Grade I stakes for 5 1/4-length win over Songandaprayer, with favored Dollar Bill another 1 3/4 lengths back. Completing the order of finish were Invisible Ink, A P Valentine, Bonnie Scot and Hero's Tribute. In winning his second of three starts this hear and his third in five career outings, Millennium Wind carried scale weight of 123 pounds home in 1:48 1-5 and paid $10.20, $5.60 and $4.20. He earned $465,000 from a $750,000 purse for Jill and David Heerensperger. Songanadaprayer, co-owned by former Duke basketball All-American Bobby Hurley and ridden by Edgar Prado, returned $7.60 and $4.80. Dollar Bill, ridden by Pat Day, paid $3. As to whether Songandaprayer would start in the Derby on May 5 at Churchill Downs, trainer John Dowd said, "We'll sit down and discuss that. We'll see what our options are." Dollar Bill is going to the Derby. "We surely didn't get to the bottom of his today, so hopefully we'll have a fresh, strong horse come Derby day," said trainer Dallas Stewart. Donna Ward, who co-trains Hero's Tribute, third behind Balto Star and Millennium Wind in the Louisiana Derby, was mystified by the colt's performance. "He just didn't run ... I am surprised by his effort. He was flat," she said. The Wards also train Florida Derby winner Monarchos, who finished second to Congaree on Saturday in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. "It went just the way we planned it," said Pincay, who won the Blue Grass on Judger in 1974. "If we got out clean, we planned to go to the front, and that's just what happened." "Laffit said he had plenty of horse and felt conformable on the lead the whole way," Hofmans said. Songandaprayer broke in front, then ran second the rest of the way. Dollar Bill was seventh with three-eighths of a mile before rallying, but he had no chance of catching the winner. | |
