MONTICELLO, N.Y. - A trainer and veterinarian were charged with injecting a trotter at Monticello Raceway with a fatal dose of a performance-enhancing drug.

Trainer-driver Marc Mosher and 70-year-old veterinarian Berkeley Briggs were accused by state police and the New York state Racing and Wagering Board.

Too Much Data, a 4-year-old mare, received the injection before she was to race Feb. 20, authorities said. Too Much Data was a 3-1 choice in the 12th race. Investigators have not said what drug was allegedly used.

Mosher and Briggs are charged with tampering with a sports contest and making an apparent false statement, both felonies, and with conspiracy, a misdemeanor. They're also charged with felony interference under the state's Agriculture and Markets law.

Mosher also is charged with conspiracy for working with others to secretly dispose of the dead horse, a misdemeanor.

The Racing and Wagering Board has suspended the licenses of both. They're due in court May 17.

Mosher, 32, of Montgomery, did not immediately return a call Saturday seeking comment.

Briggs' lawyer, Michael Shapiro, said his client has no record of criminal or professional misconduct.

Two days after Too Much Data was reported missing from the stalls, the county officials investigated three dead horses dumped at a Monticello area horse farm, police said. Two died of natural causes and were unconnected to the track; the third was Too Much Data, police said.
