| 'Limit' takes the Black-Eyed Susan By Bob Ehalt Daily Racing Form | |||
|
BALTIM0RE -- Two Item Limit surged to the lead at the top of the stretch to register a two-length victory in Friday's $200,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. Earlier in the card, License Fee captured the $100,000 Gallorette Handicap and Congressional prevailed in the $75,000 The Very One. Two Item Limit ($4.40) and jockey Richard Migliore stalked the dueling Scoop and Tap Dance before moving past the leaders from the outside in the stretch and drawing off in the Grade 2 stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Indy Glory rallied along the rail to grab second by 2 1/2 lengths over Tap Dance, the $1.10-1 favorite. Two Item Limit, owned by Joseph Graffeo and trained by Stephen L. DiMauro, raced the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.84. The victory was her second in four 2001 starts and second in a row. She won Aqueduct's Grade 3 Comely Stakes by a disqualification in her last effort. off in Gallorette
Crystal Sea was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Leisurely early fractions played a key role in the outcome. License Fee, the 6-5 favorite, was second behind 28-1 pacesetter Crystal Sea through slow fractions of 49.06 seconds and 1:13 leaving her more than enough energy left to turn back Starine, who made her United States debut in the Grade 3 stakes. "She's one of my favorite horses of all-time," Walden said about License Fee, who won the Grade 3 Sixty Sails Handicap at Sportsman's Park in her last start. "She's not blessed with tremendous speed, but she is blessed with a tremendous heart." Paul Fout, trainer of $1.70-1 second-choice Colstar, blamed his mare's fifth place finish on an ill-timed ride by jockey Jean-Luc Samyn. "I don't know what [Samyn] was thinking," Fout said. "They went the half in 49 and [Colstar's] so far back there. They just didn't come back. She was left too much to do." License Fee covered the 1 1/16 miles on the turf in 1:42.81. She earned $60,000, pushing her career earnings to $1,085,636. Congressional,
just barely, is 'The One'
But Congressional gave her backers a helacious scare as she by just a head over Merry Princess after a furious stretch duel. "I was a little nervous, especially inside the sixteenth pole," Congressional's trainer, H. Graham Motion said. "But she always makes me look smart. I always feel a certain amount of pressure because she's usually 1-5, but she handles the pressure well and I.m beginning to get better with mine." Pin Oak Stable's Congressional paid $2.60 and crossed the wire in 56.46 seconds for the five furlongs on the turf. She has won 10 of 21 starts with career earnings of $690,541. | |
