INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Trainer Bob Baffert said Wednesday that Captain Steve remains under serious consideration to run in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 1.
"He went to the track this morning and looked good," Baffert said from his barn across town at Santa Anita. "I'm leaning toward running. He's got to keep showing me he's doing well through the week. Then a work next Tuesday would probably decide."
Baffert's 60-day suspension for a positive drug test on one of his horses 13 months ago is scheduled to begin Monday and run through Aug. 23.
Robert Tourtelot, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, denied a request for a stay of the suspension. Baffert's attorney plans to seek a stay in the courts. Baffert has not commented on the suspension.
Captain Steve finished second in the $750,000 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs last Saturday, his first start since winning the $6 million Dubai World Cup in March.
The horse arrived in California on Sunday, along with Point Given, winner of the Preakness and Belmont stakes.
Captain Steve could achieve an unprecedented feat if he wins the Gold Cup. He won the Hollywood Futurity as a 2-year-old and the Swaps Stakes as a 3-year-old. No horse has ever swept the three races at Hollywood Park. | |
