| Futural disqualified after bump Associated Press | |||||

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Trainer Bobby Frankel went from agony to ecstasy twice Sunday when Aptitude won the Hollywood Gold Cup by disqualification 30 minutes after another of Frankel's horses won the same way in New Jersey.
At Monmouth Park, Senure won the United Nations Handicap by a disqualification after stewards ruled his progress was impeded by With Anticipation near midstretch.
"What a day of ups and downs," said Frankel, too busy saddling the entry of Aptitude and Skimming to watch the United Nations.
In the Gold Cup, Futural, ridden by Chris McCarron, crossed first in 2:01 3-5, just over one length ahead of Aptitude. They were dropped to third after stewards ruled that Futural came in and bumped Skimming, who then was forced into 3-5 favorite Captain Steve along the rail.
"It was an obvious foul. He knocked him off his feet. He didn't give him much of a chance, but it worked out good. I can't complain," Frankel said. "They're the greatest, the stewards. I'll be quiet for the rest of the year."
McCarron thought he had his first Gold Cup victory, one of the few races to elude him in a Hall of Fame career. Instead, his losing streak extended to 0-for-19 on a day when he was featured in a bobblehead doll giveaway.
"I thought the contact was incidental. It was so brief and slight it didn't make any difference in the race," he said. "They could have penalized me afterward. They didn't have any right to penalize the owner and trainer, especially when the second-and third-place finishers have the same owner."
Steward Thomas Ward said Futural was the best horse, but officials believed the bump cost Skimming and jockey Garrett Gomez a placing.
"Interference was significant," Ward said in a statement.
Riding Aptitude for the first time, Pincay kept the horse outside and away from the bumping, which he could see during the race.
"It was a pretty hard bump," he said. "I saw when Gomez had to take up really hard. Even with nothing happening, I thought I was going to win because my horse was gaining on him (Futural)."
Aptitude, second in last year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont, won a stakes race for the first time. Pincay tied Bill Shoemaker's record of eight Gold Cup wins with the 54-year-old's first victory since 1986.
"I'll take it any way I can," Pincay said.
"Me too," Frankel said.
Aptitude paid $5.20 and $4, the same as second-place stablemate Skimming, both owned by Juddmonte Farms. Futural was third, Captain Steve fourth and Power Wing last in the five-horse field. There was no show wagering. The starters each carried 124 pounds.
Captain Steve, ridden for the first time by Gary Stevens, was second coming into the stretch, but faded. He lost his bid to become the first horse to sweep Hollywood Park's major races for 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and older horses.
"Two weeks' rest wasn't enough," trainer Bob Baffert said, referring to the 4-year-old horse's previous start in Kentucky. "We took a shot and it didn't work. He didn't have a bite at the end."
Frankel had horses running in three major races around the country Sunday. Besides the United Nations and Gold Cup entries, Lido Palace finished second in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. Also at Hollywood Park on Sunday, Ceeband edged the Frankel-trained Squirtle Squirt, ridden by Pincay, to win the $300,000 Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Handicap by a half-length. Ridden by Matt Garcia, Ceeband covered seven furlongs in 1:21 and paid $91.80, $25.40 and $13.80. Expected favorite Caller One was scratched.
In the $250,000 Honeymoon Handicap, McCarron guided Irish-bred filly Innit to a neck victory over Live Your Dreams in the turf race. Owned by Arlington Park owner Richard Duchossois, Innit returned $7.80, $4.60 and $3. | |
