| Germany's Silvano wins Million By Mario Fox Associated Press | |||||

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- German-bred Silvano took advantage of a turf course to his liking Saturday and beat Hap by three lengths in the Million at Arlington Park.
Silvano won $600,000. "The pace was not too strong, and I got behind the leaders," Suborics said. "We got three lengths clear at the end and everything was perfect." Wohler won his first race in the United States. "It's unbelievable because it's such a prestigious race, everybody trying to win it -- and we came over and won it," Wohler said. "We worried about the rain but it stopped. (Silvano) likes it a bit soft but not too soft." Silvano is truly an international horse, having run in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai since December. Redattore's jockey, Alex Solis, said he thought the wet grass was a factor for his mount, who finished third. "My horse was running really nice, then heard the other horse coming, then tried to give me another gear but couldn't do it," Solis said. "He seemed to lose his footing." The winner covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.64 and paid $14.60, $6.80 and $4.60. Hap returned $5 and $4, while Redattore paid $6.40. Chris McCarron, on favored Bienamado, blamed the conditions for his horse finishing seventh. "I hate to blame the course, they all have to run on it, but it just wasn't my horse's day," McCarron said. "Today, he just didn't have it." In the 2000 Million, Bienamado was fourth after going off as the favorite. Hap's jockey was Jerry Bailey, who rode Chester House to victory in last year's Million. Chester House's trainer, Bobby Frankel, saddled Senure, who finished eighth Saturday. The field's 12 horses included three British horses, three from Ireland and one each from Germany and Brazil. The Million was part of the track's one-day International Festival of Racing, which includes the $700,000 Beverly D., won Saturday by England's Legend, and the $400,000 Secretariat. | |
