| With Anticipation wins the Man o'War By Ed Schuyler, Jr. Associated Press | |||||

NEW YORK -- With Anticipation, who has taken to grass racing like a duck to water, drew away from Arlington Million winner Silvano in the stretch and won the Man o'War on Saturday at Belmont Park.
Ridden by Pat Day, With Anticipation, a homebody who has raced only in the United States won by 2 1/4 lengths over Silvano, a German-bred and owned 5-year-old horse, who has raced in five countries. Third, another neck back, was Ela Athena, a 5-year-old British-bred mare, who has raced in six countries. There was a stewards' inquiry into an incident on the first turn, but it did not affect the order of finish. With Anticipation paid a winning mutuel of $6.80 after racing the 1 3/8 miles on a firm turf course in 2:15 1-5. Each of the eight starters carried 126 pounds. "It was a good field," said winning trainer Jonathan Sheppard. "The second and third finishers are international stars." Fourth another 2 1/4 lengths back was Fusaichi Zenon, Japanese-bred and owned and making his second U.S. start under California-based trainer Neil Drysdale. "I'm going to put him on ice and see if I can get him to the Breeders' Cup (Turf) on Oct. 27 at Belmont Park," Sheppard said. With Anticipation made his grass debut in April and won an allowance race at Keeneland. He then won the Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs, finished first in the United Nations Handicap but was disqualified and placed second in the race, then won the Sword Dancer on Aug. 11 at Saratoga. | |
