Belterra, Bella Bellucci out of Kentucky Oaks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Kentucky Oaks field is down to nine after Belterra and Bella Bellucci withdrew.

Belterra, the Unbridled filly who recently underwent minor throat surgery, was removed from the draw Tuesday morning by trainer Carl Nafzger.

"We just didn't have enough time," said Nafzger. "Not enough time to prepare her the right way. To run would not have been fair to the filly."

Belterra, who went unbeaten in three starts at 2, underwent surgery for an entrapped epiglottis two days after finishing third in the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland and had worked one time since then. She galloped Tuesday morning at Churchill.

The Neil Drysdale-trained Bella Bellucci, who was the 3-1 second choice, was scratched from the race Wednesday. According to Demi O'Byrne, bloodstock agent for the Michael Tabor-owned filly, Drysdale said Bella Bellucci was not acting right, and that a blood test came back "poor."

Bella Bellucci has won four of five races, including the Comely Stakes at Aqueduct in her last start.

With Bella Bellucci pulling out, Take Charge Lady and You are expected to be the favorites for the Oaks, for which a field of 11 was expected to be entered..

A total of nine 3-year-old fillies remain for 128th running of the Kentucky Oaks. The field for the $500,000 Grade 1 event with morning line odds is as follows.
