Dettori lands Arc for second year in a row

PARIS -- Marienbard, ridden by Frankie Dettori, has won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp for trainer Saeed bin Suroor and the Godolphin outfit of Sheikh Mohammed.

It was the second Arc victory in a row for Dettori and Godolphin who won last year with Sakhee.

Dettori brought Marienbard with a strong late run and held on readily from French Derby winner Sulamani and Epsom Derby victor High Chaparral.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "It was fabulous. Frankie gave the horse a super ride."

He added: "On the form book, we were hopeful of hitting the frame (getting into the first three) so to win is a dream come true."

Dettori said: It was a long way to the line. I was saying 'bring the line to me quickly.'"

The winner was a 10-1 chance with Sulamani at 2-1 and High Chaparral at 7-4 favourite.

Sixteen horses went to post for the 12 furlongs (2.4 km) test with the winner earning 560,000 pounds ($879,000).
