Peace Rules 9-5 favorite for $1M Classic

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Peace Rules was made the 9-5 morning-line favorite Monday for the $1 million Classic, the richest race on Sunshine Millions day.

The event pits horses bred in California and Florida in a total of eight races at Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

Trained by Bobby Frankel, Peace Rules will be ridden by Jerry Bailey, who'll give up his business at Gulfstream on Saturday to be at Santa Anita for the Classic and three other races.

Bailey rode Peace Rules to a second-place finish behind Ten Most Wanted in the Travers Stakes.

"He's wonderfully talented and an aggressive, speedy-type horse," he said. "He gives you every ounce he's got."

Frankel's other horse, Midas Eyes, was scratched from the Classic and is being pointed to the Strub Stakes on Feb. 7.

Malibu Stakes winner Southern Image is the 5-1 second choice in the 1 1-8-mile Classic, which was run at Gulfstream last year. It drew a full field of 14 horses.

Southern Image worked five furlongs Monday in 58.80 seconds for trainer Mike Machowsky, the best of 41 workouts at the distance.

"He's doing great," Machowsky said.

Excess Summer figures to be one of several speed horses dictating the pace. He has six victories in 10 career starts for trainer Jeff Mullins.

At Gulfstream, Joe Pesci's 4-year-old filly that carries the actor's last name will run in the $500,000 Distaff. House Party was made the 3-1 early favorite in the 1 1-16-mile Distaff.

The eight-race Sunshine Millions card kicks off with the $250,000 Oaks at Gulfstream. The tracks will alternate races and conclude with the Classic. Also at Gulfstream is the $300,000 Sprint, the $500,000 Distaff and the $500,000 Turf.

In addition to the Classic, Santa Anita will host the $250,000 Dash, the $300,000 Filly & Mare Sprint, and the $500,000 Filly & Mare Turf.

The Classic field, in post position order with jockeys and weights: Continental Red, Patrick Valenzuela, 122 pounds; Midas Eyes, Bailey, 120; Grey Memo, Matt Garcia, 122; Excessivepleasure, Jon Court, 120; Standard Setter, Ryan Fogelsonger, 120; Hot Market, Jose Valdivia, Jr., 122; Peace Rules, Jerry Bailey, 120; White Buck, Mike Smith, 120; Southern Image, Victor Espinoza, 120; Touch the Wire, Corey Nakatani, 120; Excess Summer, Gary Stevens, 120; The Judge Sez Who, Kent Desormeaux, 122.
