Lundy's Liability wins UAE Derby

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Lundy's Liability charged past the leaders in the stretch and won the UAE Derby on Saturday, giving South African trainer Mike de Kock his second straight victory in the $2 million race.

The 3-year-old Lundy's Liability caught leaders Little Jim and Petit Paris deep in the stretch of the 1 1/8-mile race and won by three-quarters of a length.

De Kock saddled last year's UAE Derby winner, Victory Moon.

The race at the Nad al Sheba track was one of five on the undercard before the $6 million Dubai World Cup.

Petit Paris, ridden by Jerry Bailey, edged Little Jim for second place, with Jack Sullivan, the only American-based horse in the field, finishing fourth.

The UAE Derby has produced several Kentucky Derby starters in the past, but it doesn't appear any contenders will emerge from this year's field.

Paolini and Right Approach finished in a dead heat for first in the $2 million Dubai Duty Free.

Right Approach gave de Kock his second win of the day, while Paolini won his first race in three years. The 7-year-old Paolini, based in Germany, went 0-for-9 in 2002-03 and was running for the first time since last summer.

In other races:

  • Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens guided Polish Summer to victory in the $2 million Dubai Sheema Classic.

Stevens, in his first race as the top rider for French trainer Andre Fabre, urged his horse to the lead a few strides from the wire for a half-length win over American entry Hard Buck. Scott's View was third in the 1 1/2-mile race on the turf.

"This is what I was dreaming of, and hopefully there will be many more to come after this,'' Stevens said. "Andre gave me great instructions. He said, `be patient and wait as long as you can.' He made it easy for me.''

Stevens, who played jockey George Woolf in the Oscar-nominated film "Seabiscuit,'' put his acting career on hold to move to France and ride exclusively for Fabre.

  • Our New Recruit led an American sweep in the $2 million Golden Shaheen, winning the six-furlong sprint with a late run past the leaders. Alke, trained by Todd Pletcher, was second, followed by Conroy and Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Cajun Beat.

  • Hometown favorite Firebreak won the $1 million Godolphin Mile for the second straight year.

The 5-year-old horse owned by Sheik Mohammed's Godolphin Racing stormed past the leaders in the stretch and won easily over Tropical Star.

Excessivepleasure, one of two American entries, was third. During, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Bailey, finished sixth.
