BALTIMORE -- Jockey Rick Wilson is showing signs of recovering from the head injuries he received when he fell off his horse during a race at Pimlico on Saturday. Wilson remains hospitalized, but the swelling on his face has subsided and he spoke briefly to his family Monday, according to his agent, John Salzman Jr. "The (doctors) are keeping him pretty sedated because he was trying to do too much after they removed all the tubes,'' Salzman said Tuesday. "He was talking, and all the movements looked good. But they're trying to keep him still.'' Wilson was thrown to the track after his mount, Advance to Go, stumbled out of the gate during the second race Saturday. Wilson lay motionless, face down, as the field rounded the first turn. He was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday that Wilson is listed in critical but stable condition. The 50-year-old rider ranks 20th on the career wins list with 4,939 victories. He has seven classic mounts on his resume, including five mounts in the Preakness at Pimlico. He missed a little more than a year after a broken right leg on October 12, 2001. | |
