Harness racing's Carl Allen dies in fall at home

OCALA, Fla. - Carl Allen, who bred, trained and raced harness racing champions, died after a fall on his farm. He was 74.

Allen was at home recovering from a racing accident when he struck his head Monday.

"He was at the place he loved, on the dirt he loved,'' said Dawn Allen, the wife of Allen's son and training partner, Rod.

Allen raised and raced such world champions as CR Kay Suzie, CR Commando, CR Renegade and Royal Troubador. The CR stood for Carl and Rod.

Allen became a full-time harness horseman after spending several years as a vacuum cleaner salesman whose business was ruined by the 1967 Detroit riots.

In April, Allen survived a horrifying spill at the Meadowlands, breaking many broken bones after being catapulted from his sulky.

Allen was one of the oldest drivers still competing, riding 118 races in 2003. He had 649 career wins and $9.8 million in earnings as a driver, and 207 wins and $5.1 in earnings as a trainer.

Allen is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mae Jean, and four sons, Rod, Chet, Mike and Marty.
