Desormeaux, McGaughey inducted into racing hall

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Kent Desormeaux, one of only three riders to win Eclipse Awards as an apprentice and established jockey, and trainer Shug McGaughey were elected Tuesday to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame.

Desormeaux, of Maurice, in Vermilion Parish, had won 4,419 races and earned $169,217,481 through May 23, 2004. His victories include the Kentucky Derby on Real Quiet and Fusaichi Pegasus and the Preakness on Real Quiet. He was America's leading rider three consecutive years, and his one-year record of 598 wins still stands.

Chris McCarron and Steve Cauthen are the only other jockeys to win Eclipse Awards as apprentices and regular riders. Desormeaux beat out jockeys Eddie Maple, Randy Romero and Jose Santos, for selection this year.

"I'm definitely beside myself,'' Desormeaux said.

McGaughey trained unbeaten Personal Ensign and Belmont Stakes winner Easy Goer, and 1998 Horse of the Year Skip Away. His horses have won 1,379 races, 237 graded stakes and eight Breeders' Cups, earning nearly $84 million.

Other trainers nominated this year were Nick Zito and John Veitch.

Also selected Tuesday were horses Skip Away and Flawlessly.

Skip Away was Horse of the Year at age 5, a champion 3-year-old and champion older male. He won 18 of 38 races, including a Breeders' Cup Classic, and earned more than $9 million.

Owner Carolyn Hine said the horse, purchased for $22,500 for her birthday, helped prolong the life of her husband, trainer Sonny Hine. Hine, who also is in the hall, died in 2000.

"I thank God and I thank Sonny for getting Skippy in,'' she said.

Other male horses nominated were Lure and Manila.

Flawlessly was a champion grass mare in 1992 and 1993. She was raced by Harbor View Farm and was trained most of her career by Charlie Whittingham. She won both the Grade I Matriarch and Ramona Handicaps three years in succession. Flawlessly won 16 of 28 races and earned $2,572,536.

Flawlessly's owner, Patrice Wolfson, called the selection to the hall, "the thrill of a lifetime.''

Flawlessly beat out Mom's Command and Sky Beauty in the female horse category.

The winners will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Aug. 9 in Saratoga Springs.
