Saarland's Derby Diary: Sunday
By Jeremy Plonk
Special to ESPN.com

Editor's Note: Since January 1, ESPN.com has been tracking the progress of Triple Crown hopeful Saarland in a weekly diary of the horse's season-long progress. Over the course of Saarland's nine days in Louisville, his final Kentucky Derby tune-ups will be updated daily.

Settling in
Saturday's deluge of rain makes way Sunday for sunny skies and a drying racetrack for morning workouts. Saarland continues his Kentucky Derby preparations with a 1-1/2 mile gallop as his last major tuneup will come tomorrow.

The inside of the Churchill Downs racetrack is sealed for morning drills, while the middle of the track remains a bit choppy. Exercise rider Juice Krajewski moves Saarland down two paths off the rail to get a hold of the better going during this mornings gallop.

"He galloped great," Krajewski says. "Yesterday he was awesome, today he maintained it. Hes really starting to take to this racetrack."

With trainer Shug McGaughey en route from New York today, assistant trainer Robbie Medina mans the ship for one last day. Medina has been in Florida and Kentucky much of the spring, and has not been around Saarland since the colt left Florida in early March.

"He sure looks better than he did in Florida," Medina says. "He has a lot more color to him. You can look at him here and see the sun bounce off his coat. When a horse is hitting on call cylinders it shows through."

Saarland enjoys a long graze of nearly 45 minutes behind the barns along Longfield Avenue before dinner at 4 p.m. and an easy night inside Barn 43. His big work comes tomorrow with his final pre-Derby breeze. McGaughey may work the colt either a half-mile or five furlongs.

Krajewski, who had not breezed a horse at Churchill Downs since working here 10 years ago, took the stables 3-year-old filly Aribis out for a half-mile work this morning. The trial run gives him a feel for what Saarland will tackle tomorrow.

Forecasts call for wet weather Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Louisville.
