LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Trainer Bobby Frankel was unable to finish his blazing start on Kentucky Derby Day.

Frankel won the first three graded stakes on the undercard and finished second in a fourth.

But the race he really wanted -- the Derby -- ended in disappointment, with Empire Maker finishing second and his other horse, Peace Rules, placing third behind winner Funny Cide.

Still, the day was hardly a total loss for Frankel.

He won the Churchill Downs Handicap with Aldebaran, the Citgo Distaff Mile with Heat Haze and Humana Distaff Handicap with Sightseek.

In the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, Requete finished second to Honor in War.

Heat Haze, Sightseek and Requete are owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, which also owns Empire Maker.

Jerry Bailey, riding Empire Maker, also rode Aldebaran and Sightseek. Peace Rules jockey Edgar Prado rode Requete.

In the Churchill Handicap for 4-year-olds and up, Bailey dropped Aldebaran to 11th place as the 12-horse field charged down the backstretch in the seven-furlong sprint.

Bailey swung the 5-year-old son of Mr. Prospector to the outside in the final turn, then used hard, left-handed whipping to trigger the decisive rally.

The 1.3-to-1 favorite broke out of a pack to win by 2½ lengths over Pass Rush and earn $144,956 for owner Flaxman Holdings Ltd.

Aldebaran won for the fifth time in 20 starts and paid $4.60 to win.

"I took a look at the field and realized this is the easiest bunch he's seen in two years,'' Frankel said. "There wasn't any real top horse that could steal it away from him.''

The 4-year-old Heat Haze, with Jose Valdivia Jr. in the saddle, also used a powerful stretch move to win the Distaff Mile.

Copying Bailey's move with Aldebaran, Valdivia guided his horse to the outside at the top of the stretch to make room for a 1½-length win over Quick Tip.

Heat Haze won for the fifth time in nine starts and earned $72,540. She paid $6.80 to win as the 2.40-to-1 second betting choice.

"She has beautiful action,'' Frankel said. "We took our time with her. She's worth it.''

In the Humana Distaff, Bailey maneuvered Sightseek between horses in the stretch and drew off for a 4½-length win over Gold Mover.

Sightseek won for fifth time in nine starts, earning $137,888. She paid $3.60 to win as the .80-to-1 favorite.

"Jerry rode a great race,'' Frankel said. "That's why you hire a guy like him.''

Prado dropped Requete to the back of the pack in the eight-horse field in the 1 1/8-mile Woodford Reserve. Prado tried to rally Requete along the rail, but Honor in War reached the wire before Requete could catch him.

Honor in War paid $50.60, $17 and $7.80. Requete, the 5.5-to-1 third choice in the betting, paid $8.80 and $5.80.
