Marienbard, trained in Newmarket by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by World Series champion Frankie Dettori, ran away with the sixth leg of the 2002 World Series - the Grosser Preis von Baden over 2,400 metres at Baden-Baden Racecourse on Sunday. Salve Regina, trained by Andreas Schutz, was second with the Wolfgang Figge-trained Noroit in third. Race favourite Boreal was up with the pace but faded in the final furlong to take sixth. Marienbard, a five-year-old son of Caerleon, disputed third place along with the 2000 Grosser Preis von Baden winner Samum, with Andreas Suborics in the saddle, with the field being taken along by the Uwe Ostmann-trained Auenteufel taking the field along. Turning in for home Dettori asked Marienbard for an effort and he went clear of the field to win by two and a half lengths. After the race Dettori, who performed his trademark flying dismount, said, "This race has been very lucky for me, I won it with Germany. Marienbard is a horse in top form and it is great to see such a good performance. "The horse has been going so well, I rode him a couple of weeks ago and he was ready for the race." Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said, "Sheikh Mohammed called me straight after the race and stated that Marienbard's next race is likely to be the Arc de Triomphe (the ninth leg of the 2002 World Series. We will have a look at the ground as he would not want it too soft. "He was a good horse last year and he has matured really well and he is going sweetly. When he is in great form you can see it a mile off." Salve Regina proved what a talented filly she was by finishing second. The three-year-old daughter of Monsun won the Preis der Diane and was runner-up in the German Derby. Dettori now takes back the lead in the 2002 World Series after losing it briefly following Jerry Bailey's win the Arlington Million two weeks ago. The next race in the Series is the Ireland The Food Island Champion Stakes which will be run at Leopardstown on Saturday and could see the return of Godolphin's Grandera who is still heading the rankings table. |
