Storyline - Mechanical grip important in Daytona's "dirty" air: The tire compound Goodyear runs on both the left- and right-side at Daytona have been specifically selected to give a good amount of grip to help with stability as the cars get buffeted around in the turbulent air generated by the close-quarters racing found on this restrictor plate track.
"We tested at Daytona last spring and made an adjustment to both tread compounds in an effort to keep the cars more stable as they race in the pack," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "The tight racing we find at Daytona, with cars racing at 200 miles per hour within inches of each other, requires a lot of mechanical grip through the tires to add that stability. We've had two successful races on this tire set-up - both last July and during Speedweeks in February - so we feel very comfortable with this recommendation."
Notes - Third straight Daytona races for Cup, Xfinity on this tire set-up: Teams in both the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same tire set-up at Daytona this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup and Xfinity teams have run at the Speedway since this race weekend last summer . . . Daytona is the only track at which these teams run either of these two Goodyear tire codes . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Daytona . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
