The Delaware Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which spreads awareness on the facts, risk factors and symptoms associated with pancreatic cancer, will receive a unique recognition in November when the Monster Monument at Victory Plaza, presented by Smithfield, is lit in purple to recognize the organization during Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
Founded in 1999, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is dedicated to fighting a disease on track to become the second most deadly cancer by 2020. The 46-foot tall Monster Monument will be lit in purple during the evening hours in November as part of the Monster Mile's initiative for charities and non-profit organizations to promote their causes using one of the mid-Atlantic's most recognizable landmarks.
In addition to purple in November, this year the Monster Monument has been illuminated pink to mark breast cancer awareness in October, teal in September for the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation, which raises funds toward ending ovarian and childhood cancer and blue for autism awareness in April.
"We're so grateful Dover International Speedway will be joining PanCAN in the fight against pancreatic cancer, and lighting Miles the Monster in purple for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month this November," said Lauren Stotz Annal, chair of PanCAN's Delaware Affiliate. "For too long, pancreatic cancer has been a neglected cancer, but November is our month to make our voices heard and bring greater attention, awareness, and hopefully, better outcomes, to this deadly disease."
Organizations can make requests to light the Monster Monument in several ways, including using the hashtag #LightUpMiles on social media and sending recommendations to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note that there is no application process but the Speedway will keep a list of appropriate requests and use those suggestions whenever appropriate.
If an organization is selected, in addition to lighting up the Monster Monument, it can receive the following:
• Tickets to upcoming NASCAR tripleheader weekends
• An ad in the Dover souvenir program
• Table space along the vendor midway on NASCAR weekends
• An auction/donation item for a charitable event
Built in 2008, the Monster Monument is the largest fiberglass statue at any sports venue in the world. The base of the monument pays tribute to race winners at Dover International Speedway and features dedications to legendary drivers who are recognized for their special accomplishments earned on the Monster Mile's high-banked, one-mile concrete oval. Those featured include Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, David Pearson and Jeff Gordon.
Dover International Speedway hosts two NASCAR tripleheader weekends in 2019 on May 3-5 and Oct. 4-6 as it celebrates its 50th anniversary season, including two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races on Sunday, May 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6.
The Oct. 6, 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoff race is the 100th NASCAR Cup Series race in track history. Dover will be the 10th track in the nation to host 100 or more NASCAR Cup Series events.
