Richard Childress Racing driver Shane Lee will drive the No. 3 Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma Chevrolet Camaro at the NASCAR Xfinity race at ISM Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, Nov. 10. The special wrap scheme will help raise awareness to save seriously injured children across the U.S. and encourage everyone to support the Childress Institute's Race to Give Day on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
"Ten years ago, when Judy and I learned that serious injury was killing more than 12,000 children in the U.S. each year, more than all other causes combined, we decided to act," said Richard Childress, Chairman and CEO of RCR and co-founder of the Childress Institute. "Car accidents, sports injuries and falls on the playground are all pediatric trauma. We can save the lives of so many injured kids if more people support this vital cause."
A decade later, the impact of the Childress Institute has helped reduce pediatric trauma deaths by 25 percent, but more work is needed. No one ever expects a serious injury, but the Childress Institute's work helps children and their families when the unimaginable happens.
"In 2008, the same year the Childress family started the Institute, my wife and I lost our youngest son, Matthew, when he sustained a helmet-to-helmet hit during his first varsity football game," said the Childress Institute's Executive Director Bob Gfeller. "My personal experience fuels my passion to lead our efforts to reduce injuries and improve outcomes for seriously injured children. A donation of any size on Race to Give Day can make a difference."
Pediatric trauma is the No. 1 killer of kids in America and almost 300,000 children are hospitalized for serious injuries each year, many of whom struggle with long-term recoveries and disabilities. Many of these accidents are preventable and treatable if the right education is in place when families need it most. It can happen anywhere, at any time to any child. Improving care and preventing injury can make a difference.
