Jeff Mathis, Angels agree to $1.7M deal

The Los Angeles Angels reached agreement on a one-year, $1.7 million contract with catcher Jeff Mathis on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration.

Mathis gets a $400,000 raise despite hitting .195 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 68 games. Mathis is expected to split time with Mike Napoli and, perhaps, rookie Hank Conger, behind the plate this season.

Mathis is a .199 career hitter in six seasons, but Angels manager Mike Scioscia has widely praised Mathis' defensive abilities.

The Angels have six remaining arbitration-eligible players who have yet to sign, including ace Jered Weaver and slugger Kendry Morales.
