MIAMI -- Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Andre Ethier set a major league record for the month of April on Tuesday and then extended it on Wednesday.
He ran his hitting streak to 23 games Tuesday with a first-inning, RBI double off Florida Marlins right-hander Chris Volstad in his team's 4-2 loss.
He then had a one-out single in the fourth inning of a matinee against the Marlins to reach 24 games.
Ethier broke the record held by former Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who hit in 22 consecutive games in April 1971 for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Before Tuesday's game, Ethier said he hasn't heard from his former manager about his hit streak.
"I guess he has other issues to deal with that he's not worried about 40-year-old April records," Ethier said, according to MLB.com. Torre is now Major League Baseball's executive vice president for baseball operations.
Ethier has hit .414 (36-for-87) during his streak, which is the longest by a Dodgers player since Paul Lo Duca hit in 25 consecutive games from May 17 to June 18 in 2003.
"I'm taking it all in," he said, according to MLB.com. "I'm not sitting there ignoring it. I just go out and execute and do whatever the task calls for. There aren't many chances in a major league career to do something like this. I've gotten to the point in my career I can enjoy and have fun with it."
