Zack Greinke returns from calf injury

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Zack Greinke finally made his second spring training start on Wednesday after missing two weeks with a strained right calf and said his leg held up just fine. Greinke's two innings of work, however, will be his last in the Cactus League.

The Los Angeles Dodgers depart for Australia on Sunday night, meaning Greinke's next two starts will come against minor-leaguers.

"Ideally, I'd like to have another start or two in spring, but it's just not going to happen so you just have to get as ready as you can without pushing it too hard and getting hurt again," Greinke said.

Greinke left his first spring start on Feb. 27 after just four pitches when he injured his calf. Wednesday, he pitched a scoreless first inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but allowed three runs, including an Andy Marte home run, in the second inning. Greinke said the elevated pitchers were a matter of his arm not being in shape yet and had nothing to do with his calf.

"My two main goals are getting healthy and then trying to get ready," Greinke said. "Right now, I'm neither one of those quite yet, but I'm closer on the calf than actually pitching good."

Greinke said his goal is to pitch in the Dodgers' first North American series, which begins March 30 in San Diego.

The Dodgers were managed Wednesday by bench coach Tim Wallach. Manager Don Mattingly will miss their Wednesday and Thursday games after a death in his family.
