The second bench-clearing incident, sparked when pitcher Zack Greinke was hit by an Ian Kennedy pitch in the left shoulder, turned ugly, with the teams forming a scrum near the Arizona on-deck circle. Several punches were thrown, and Dodgers reliever J.P. Howell slammed Arizona coach Turner Ward into the railing of the camera well.
The Dodgers were upset that phenom Yasiel Puig had been hit in the nose by a 92-mph pitch in the sixth inning. Puig stayed in the game, and in the top of the seventh inning, Greinke hit Arizona catcher Miguel Montero in the back with a pitch.
"If you can't pitch inside without hitting somebody in the head, then you shouldn't pitch inside," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "So, [Puig] gets hit in the face, Montero gets hit in the back, it's over. It continued on. Talk is cheap. It doesn't matter. It's a good win for us."
A source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that no punishments or suspensions are expected until Thursday.
Kennedy appeared to look in the direction of Arizona's bench before hitting Greinke with the first pitch.
"I didn't order anything," Gibson said after the game.
McGwire got into a couple of face-to-face confrontations with both Gibson and third-base coach Matt Williams.
"What [Greinke] did to Miggy was obvious. … I didn't think it was right, what he did to Miggy," Kennedy said.
All together, five players were hit by pitches in the game. Mattingly could be seen yelling at Montero during the melee. Suspensions and fines likely will be forthcoming.
"They've got a lot of guys over there that I respect in [Alan Trammell] and Gibby, the way they played the game. Don Baylor, I played with him. I respect the way they play the game," Mattingly said. "We're competing, we're trying to win a game. They're trying to win a game, they're going to protect their guys. I'm going to protect my guys."
In April, Greinke broke his left collarbone in San Diego in a brawl sparked when Carlos Quentin charged the mound after being hit by a pitch.
