LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have fired bench coach Trey Hillman, a move that could lead to further tension between the organization and manager Don Mattingly.
Hillman confirmed he has been fired in a phone conversation Tuesday with ESPNLosAngeles.com, saying that he appreciated and enjoyed his time with the Dodgers and harbored no ill will toward the organization.
"This organization treated me great," Hillman said. "I think this organization wants to get somewhere real quick and they just didn't feel like I was best for the manager and the players."
Mattingly put pressure on the Dodgers' front office during a news conference Monday to either extend him a multiyear contract offer or to move on without him.
Mattingly also said Monday that he hoped his entire coaching staff would return next season, suggesting that the decision to fire Hillman was made by someone else in the Dodgers' front office.
"It didn't shock me to hear what [Mattingly] had to say," Hillman told ESPNLosAngeles.com. "When you're in this market, there's a lot of pressure on you and you need to have leverage.
"If you're constantly trying to prove yourself year after year with extremely high payroll guys, I don't believe that gives the leverage to do what you need to do sometimes."
The Dodgers also dismissed advance scout Wade Taylor, and athletic trainer Sue Falsone resigned Monday.
Hillman was the only Dodgers coach let go. The team picked up options on pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, first-base coach Davey Lopes and third-base coach Tim Wallach and is in discussions about retaining bullpen coach Chuck Crim and assistant hitting coach John Valentin. Hitting coach Mark McGwire was signed to a multiyear contract last November.
Hillman said he was informed of his firing by Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti. Mattingly was flying to his Indiana home Tuesday, Hillman said.
Always popular among players and a close friend of Mattingly's, Hillman came under fire this season for some of Mattingly's perceived weakness on in-game strategic moves.
Hillman has been manager Mattingly's bench coach for the past three seasons. He was the former manager of the Kansas City Royals and the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan.
The Dodgers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in six games of the National League Championship Series. Mattingly's $1.4 million option for 2014 was guaranteed when the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS, but his future in Los Angeles is now in doubt.
