UCLA's starting defensive end Datone Jones broke his foot Tuesday in practice and will be sidelined indefinitely, coach Rick Neuheisel said.
Jones, a 6-foot-4, 269-pound junior from Compton High, was a sophomore All-American last season who had four sacks and 11 tackles for a loss. Nate Chandler, who played some tight end last season and was making the switch to defensive tackle, will be the probable replacement for Jones.
"I think the more likely scenario [that he'll be back] is somewhere when we get around October," Neuheisel said. "He took a step that caused a deal. He was wearing the same shoes that he always wears so it wasn't a shoe issue. It was just one of those freak things."
Jones was carted off the field and was in good spirits, but X-rays confirmed the break, Neuheisel said.
