Robin's hood

The Mag's Andy Latack found a reunion brewin' at Madison Square Garden over the weekend.

Bevon Robin wants to make a deal with me. When I ask the Fordham point guard for a few minutes of his time, he proposes a tradeoff: "Lemme see your pen first," he says, smiling good-naturedly. Since hitting the game-winner in the Rams' gutty upset over No. 24 St. John's minutes earlier, Robin has been one happy guy.

I hand over my trusty Bic and Robin jogs off. "Hey, Pos!" he yells, "Gimme your number." The Knicks' Lavor Postell -- milling about in the tunnel before a game of his own in a few hours -- obliges. The former Johnnie scrawls the number of his celly and gives his old friend a parting hug. Even though Robin just handed them a particularly sour-tasting loss, Johnnies past and present treat him like family.

Which he is. Fordham and St. John's are New York City schools, their rosters dotted with New York City prep products. So these guys were boys long before they were opponents. Example: on his way to the game-winning lay-in, Robin drove by Anthony Glover -- a good friend and former teammate at Rice High in The Bronx. Robin is so tight with most of the Red Storm that he works out with them at their facilities over the summer.

The steady stream of well-wishers makes our interview drag on for awhile, but the former St. John's recruit doesn't have anywhere to be. "I wanna soak this up as long as I can," Robin says, reveling in the win over his buddies from Queens.

But when some of Postell's Knicks teammates start filing in, it's time for Robin to jet. As I watch him vanish down the tunnel, bidding farewell to the Red Storm players and brushing by Chris Childs and Allan Houston in the process, I can't help thinking that there's probably more talent in this stretch of hallway than there will be on the court tonight. After all, the Knicks are playing the Nuggets.
